  Okeechobee is on the North tip of Lake Okeechobee, and is centrally located between the Atlantic Ocean (approx. 50 miles east), and Gulf of Mexico (approx. 60 miles west). Cities nearby are: West Palm Beach - 61 miles, Miami - 126 miles, Ft. Myers - 95 miles, Tampa - 132 miles, and Orlando - 105 miles. Lake Okeechobee does have ocean and gulf access via the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee rivers which are part of the intra-coastal waterway, and serve as a recreational and commercial link.  
  Orlando is approximately 105 miles North, and Miami is approximately 150 miles Southeast. At the center of Florida's heartland, Lake Okeechobee is known as the "Bass Capital of the World," and is the second largest lake in the USA with 730 square miles, and 448,000 acres of water with an average depth of 10 feet. This largest Florida lake derived its name from the Seminole Indian words meaning "Big Water."
